Are you wondering how to promote your content on Instagram and reach more audiences? Are you clueless about the algorithm of social media? If yes, then this article is for you!
So first let’s start with understanding what exactly social media algorithms means.
Basically, what comes on top of your feed and which content is to be prioritized, is decided on the basis of social media algorithms. It sorts your feed by your subject of interest instead of reverse chronological order.
Algorithms change from time to time, but luckily adapting to the new algorithm isn’t difficult. Now let’s dive into the ocean of the New Instagram Algorithm!
Instagram is the second-largest social media platform for marketers and consumers alike, with 1 billion monthly active users. Facebook still remains the first. Nevertheless, the engagement rate of Instagram is higher than Facebook.
Algorithm of Instagram keeps evolving as it is powered by Machine Learning. But, there are 5 Key Factors of Instagram Algorithm which influence the feed post:
- Search history
On the explore page, the amount of engagement a piece of content is receiving and the overall engagement of that page in general matters the most. In a nutshell, the more the Instagram algorithm thinks you will like a post, the higher it will be placed on your search page.
Posts of people with whom we interact regularly on Instagram usually bump up on top of our feed. It is because Instagram wants to prioritize showing you posts from accounts that you care about. This is an indication for brands and creators to engage and interact with their followers more. The algorithm values DMs, tagging, liking, reshares, commenting, etc.
When you spend hours scrolling on Instagram feed, you may frequently come across underperforming posts with low engagement rates, as compared to someone who just spends 30 minutes.
If you often search for an account and spend time on their profile, Instagram takes a hint that you find their content engaging. Due to the Instagram algorithm, it will gradually start prioritizing posts from that account on your feed. The same is the deal with hashtags.
If someone follows thousands of accounts, it is hard for them to catch up on each post present on their feed. But someone who follows hundreds of accounts is likely to see every post that has been uploaded by people they follow.
Most users still think that their feed is customized by people and the category of pages they follow, which is totally a myth. Instagram records your behavior and preferences and displays similar posts on feed accordingly.
Instagram Algorithm of IGTV
IGTV is relatively new. In IGTV, you can upload videos that are more than 1 minute and up to 15 minutes long. Everyone is still trying to figure out how its algorithm works. Apparently, it has the same criteria as posts.
Currently we can see three categories:
- For you
In the ‘For You’ section, there are IGTV videos that Instagram thinks you will like. Mostly based upon topics in which you showed interest in the past, just like posts algorithms.
Here you can see IGTV videos that are uploaded by people you already follow.
This is basically a collection of featured IGTV videos. All trending and popular videos with high engagement are listed here.
These were the updates of Instagram algorithm 2020. So what are you waiting for? Use them in your favor and take your Instagram account to the next level!
